Wind power is one of the oldest and simplest forms of renewable energy. Historically, wind energy
was harnessed and used in mechanical power applications. With modern design and manufacturing techniques
and escalating fossil fuel prices, Real wind turbines are now an affordable and efficient means of
generating electricity. Generally, small wind turbines start to generate electricity in wind speeds
of approx. 2.5-4 metres per second (force 3), and their optimum wind speed is 10-12m/s (force 5).
As an example, with an average wind speed of 5m/s (force 3), a 6kW turbine will generate an average
of 11,000 units per year.
Typical UK domestic consumption is about 3,200 annually. If the turbine
is close to the National Grid it is possible to sell surplus electricity to the grid, as well as
having a back up for when demand exceeds supply. If the site is not close to the Grid then the energy
produced can be stored by charging a battery bank. The ideal site for a turbine is on a smooth
and exposed hill top, and more than a hundred metres clear of any obstructions such as trees or
